Ex-Maccabi Tel Aviv figure caused a stir: "Trembling with fear at night, taking pills"
Peter Bosz and PSV Eindhoven were defeated 4:0 in the Dutch Super Cup and the coach reacted with irony to a question about Jordi Cruyff's recruitment campaign at Ajax: "It's pathetic." Wesley Patati scored one of the goals for Alkmaar and broke a 33-match drought, his team set a new goal.
Almost 7.5 million euros were paid by AZ Alkmaar last summer to Maccabi Tel Aviv for Wesley Patati. The Brazilian's debut season in the Netherlands was not easy; he struggled to find his place and meet expectations, but it seems he is arriving much more mature for the upcoming season.
After showing good form during the preparation period, Patati starred yesterday, Sunday, in the first official match for AZ Alkmaar, in which they defeated the reigning champion PSV Eindhoven 4:0 in the Johan Cruyff Shield. The Brazilian scored the second goal in the 51st minute with a beautiful shot into the top corner.
With this, the 22-year-old player broke a drought of 33 consecutive matches without scoring a goal for AZ Alkmaar. The last time he found the net was on October 18, 2025, and he has now recorded his third goal for the team. "Curled the ball beautifully," they remarked in the Netherlands regarding the execution.
Patati celebrated winning a second title with AZ Alkmaar, but the club aims to take another step forward in the coming season and perhaps fight for the championship. "The reigning Cup holder has loudly established its position as a serious team to win the title," declared "De Telegraaf" after the 4:0.
Coach Leroy Echteld, who replaced Maarten Martens in the middle of last season and led AZ Alkmaar to a Cup win and seventh place in the league, said:
"This is an important title, the second in a short time. I am very happy and if we continue like this, things will develop quickly. We are marking Europe as a goal this season."

And on the losing side, PSV, led by another former Maccabi Tel Aviv figure, Peter Bosz, remained in a numerical disadvantage after just nine minutes after Joey Veerman received a direct red card. This was the first red card ever against the midfielder in 375 career matches, and it is the fastest red card in the history of the Dutch Super Cup.
At the end of the match, Bosz was asked about Ajax's arms race. The team of Oscar Gloukh, under technical director Jordi Cruyff (other former members of the yellow team), has so far signed Marcos Leonardo from Al-Hilal, Caio Henrique from Monaco, Tolu Arokodare from Wolves, Daley Blind, and Julian Brandt.
"Are you worried about what is happening in Amsterdam? Big names are coming to Ajax, how is PSV reacting to this?" asked a journalist from the popular "NOS" website to Bosz, and the coach replied with irony: "Yes, I lie in bed trembling all night, having trouble falling asleep, I take pills for it."
The coach's answer was met with laughter from some of those present at the press conference, but the questioner was angry: "It's pathetic. You think it's a stupid question, but from my point of view, you surely understand that I would want to ask you about it." Bosz replied: "Then my answer is no, it doesn't matter to me."
