El Al flight to New York makes emergency landing in Rome due to medical emergency
An urgent medical incident during a flight from Israel to the US forced an emergency landing in Rome to evacuate a passenger. Passengers were offered free Wi-Fi as compensation for the delay.
An El Al flight that departed from Israel last night bound for New York was forced to divert and make an emergency landing in Rome after a passenger suffered a medical emergency that required immediate evacuation for treatment.
The incident occurred several hours into the flight. Doctors who happened to be on board were called to assist, and after examining the passenger, they determined that a medical evacuation was necessary and that it was impossible to wait until the scheduled arrival in New York.
Following their assessment, the decision was made to divert the aircraft to Rome to allow for the passenger's safe transfer to a medical facility. Upon landing, the remaining passengers were required to stay on board while the crew awaited the necessary permits for takeoff and the continuation of the journey to the United States.
The plane remained in Rome for approximately two hours. Once the passenger was successfully evacuated and all clearances were obtained, the flight resumed its course toward New York.
For the passengers, the diversion meant a significant extension of their travel time. In addition to the planned 12-hour flight, they spent two extra hours on the ground, leading to missed connecting flights for some. To mitigate the inconvenience, El Al provided all passengers with complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi for the remainder of the journey.
Although the flight turned into a longer trip than anticipated, the decision to land was made solely to address the urgent medical needs of the passenger.
