Blood tests are an integral part of monitoring millions of patients around the world, but in the future, there may be no need to come to the clinic at all. Researchers from King's College London have presented a new portable device that allows performing a blood test at home, transferring the data in real time to a mobile phone, and even sharing it with the medical staff. If the technology is approved for broad clinical use, it may change the way chronic patients are monitored.

The path to advanced home medicine

The new device connects to the phone via Bluetooth and incorporates artificial intelligence algorithms to analyze the data. According to the researchers, it allows performing blood tests outside the clinic, with the results transferred directly to a dedicated application, which also allows sharing with the attending physician. The vision of the research team is to make routine blood tests simpler and more accessible, especially for patients who need frequent monitoring, such as those with diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, and other chronic conditions.

Today, many of them are required to come again and again to clinics or hospitals just to perform laboratory tests. According to the researchers, home monitoring may allow doctors to detect deterioration in the patient's condition at an earlier stage, adjust treatment quickly, and even reduce the burden on healthcare systems.

Not yet a replacement for the laboratory

Alongside the enthusiasm, the researchers emphasize that this is a technology that is still in the stages of development and evaluation, and it does not replace the accepted laboratory tests at this stage. Before it enters widespread use, it will be necessary to complete additional studies and prove that its level of accuracy meets medical standards. If it successfully passes the testing and approval stages, the technology may be another step on the way to remote medicine, where a large part of medical monitoring will be carried out at the patient's home, without the need for frequent visits to clinics.
