Memorial sign for Amos Oz vandalized in Arad; Mayor calls it a "shameful act"
A tourist sign placed in front of the home of late author Amos Oz was vandalized in Arad. Mayor Yair Maayan condemned the incident, describing it as a shameful act by vandals attempting to disrupt public order in the city.
The tourist sign placed in front of the home of author Amos Oz was vandalized this Monday morning in Arad. In a statement, Arad Mayor Yair Maayan noted that the sign commemorates the rich literary work that established Oz as one of the most prominent writers in the State of Israel.
According to the mayor, this is a "shameful and foolish act" by vandals attempting to impose their own rules on public spaces and disrupt life in the city. "Municipal workers immediately cleaned the sign, and the municipal security officer will file a police complaint to bring the perpetrators to justice. We will not accept attempts to harm our public space," he added.
Amos Oz passed away in December 2018 following a battle with cancer. He remains one of the most respected and well-known Israeli writers globally. His books have been translated into 42 different languages—more than those of any other Israeli author. Throughout his career, Oz received numerous prestigious awards, including the Israel Prize in 1998, the Goethe Prize in 2005, and the Heinrich Heine Prize in 2008. Since 2007, he had been a regular candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
