Protester placed under house arrest over anti-Netanyahu sign
A 49-year-old Haifa resident has been placed under five days of house arrest and banned from Horev Square for 15 days following a protest against the Prime Minister. The protester held a sign labeling Benjamin Netanyahu a "Hamas financier," accompanied by images of a rifle and the Hamas flag. The Detainee Support System has criticized the police action, while authorities cited concerns regarding public order.
A Haifa resident who protested against the Prime Minister at a central city square was placed under five days of house arrest on Wednesday. Additionally, authorities issued a 15-day ban preventing him from entering Horev Square, the site of his protest.
The protester, a 49-year-old man with no prior criminal record, has been demonstrating for approximately two weeks at the Horev junction. He carried a sign featuring a photograph of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu next to the text "Hamas financier," with an image of the Hamas flag and a rifle displayed underneath. Following the police intervention, the protester sought assistance from the "Ma'arach Otef Atzurim" (Detainee Support System), and attorney Tomer Ben-Hamo filed an appeal against the police decision. The Haifa Magistrate's Court is scheduled to hear the appeal today.
The "Ma'arach Otef Atzurim" organization stated:
"This is another move by the Israel Police intended to harm freedom of expression and those who seek to exercise their right to express an opinion against the one who financed the greatest disaster that has happened to the country. The Israel Police, instead of investigating those who approved the transfer of suitcases of cash to Hamas, chooses to investigate those who express their opinion on the matter publicly."
The Israel Police issued the following statement:
"The suspect was detained after he held up a sign containing a flag identified with the terrorist organization Hamas, on which an illustration of a long weapon appears. The totality of the content displayed and the circumstances at the scene raised suspicion of offenses and a breach of public order, and accordingly, the suspect was detained and subsequently questioned at the police station; upon completion of his questioning, he was released under conditions."
The police added that while they view freedom of expression and the right to protest as fundamental rights in a democratic state, they will continue to act in any case where there is a suspicion of an offense or behavior that could harm public peace and security.
