Israeli Veteran of Classified Unit Charged with Spying for Iran

An Israeli citizen, who served in regular and reserve duty in a classified unit, has been charged with contact with a foreign agent and attempting to provide information for the benefit of the enemy. An investigation by the Erazim unit (Aham) of the Ministry of Defense Security Department (Malmab) and the Shin Bet revealed that the defendant was in contact with an individual who identified themselves as an Iranian intelligence operative. At one point, the defendant was even asked to assist in recruiting a soldier to establish contact with those elements.
The court permitted publication on Wednesday that the State Attorney's Office filed the indictment on July 16 at the Tel Aviv District Court. In a joint statement, the police, the Ministry of Defense, and the Shin Bet reported that the Cyber Department of the State Attorney's Office filed the charges.
The Shin Bet, Malmab, the IDF, and the Israel Police reiterated their warning to citizens against maintaining contact with foreign elements from enemy states or unidentified parties:
"We call on citizens to report any suspicious or unusual contact to law enforcement agencies. Any such contact may amount to a violation of the law from its inception."
In conclusion, the agencies stated:
"The security agencies of the State of Israel will continue to act with determination to locate and thwart terrorism and espionage activities and will work to prosecute all those involved to the fullest extent of the law. Hostile elements, including intelligence and terror entities from enemy states, continue their efforts to recruit and operate Israelis to carry out espionage and hostile acts, often through approaches on social media."
