Teacher weighing 159 kg steps on student: Incident details and court ruling

A severe incident occurred at a school in Minnesota: Jason Rogers, a 49-year-old former teacher, stepped with both feet onto the back of a sixth-grade student, using the child "like a stool." The incident took place at Underwood School during a lockdown drill simulating an armed intruder entering the building.

Rogers, who weighed at least 159 kilograms at the time, explained during his interrogation that he felt the students were not taking the drill seriously. He stood on the child's back for about ten seconds until he heard him groan in pain.

Following the incident, the student was taken to the hospital due to concerns of a spinal fracture. The child's mother recounted that due to the injury, he had difficulty straightening up and walked around the house "like an 80-year-old man." During his interrogation, Rogers—who had taught science and served as a wrestling and football coach at the school since 2012—admitted that he had also stepped on two other students that same day.

Although he pleaded guilty to three counts of malicious punishment of a minor, which could have led to a sentence of up to one year in prison for each count, the court granted him a stay of adjudication. This means the criminal charges against him will be completely erased if he successfully completes a two-year probation period and does not commit further offenses.

In addition to the probation period, Rogers was ordered to:

1. Perform 90 hours of community service.

2. Undergo an anger management assessment and treatment.

3. Pay fines and costs totaling $2,250.

4. Write letters of apology to the affected students.

The teacher, who was placed on administrative leave and resigned shortly after the incident, was also required to permanently surrender his teaching license.
