A child on the lap and hands on the wheel: unusual footage from the road

Unusual footage captured by a police camera revealed a driver who allowed a minor to sit on his lap and hold the steering wheel while the vehicle was moving on the road. Using a still camera, the officers noticed the minor sitting on the driver's lap, in the driver's seat, and holding the steering wheel during the drive.

The incident was documented during enforcement activity by National Traffic Police officers from the Menashe unit over the weekend. The police defined the act as "irresponsible behavior" and warned that it endangered both the minor and other road users.

According to the police, the child sitting on the driver's lap impaired his ability to fully control the vehicle and react in an emergency.

"In the event of emergency braking or an accident, the minor could have been very seriously injured," the police stated.

They further emphasized that even a short trip or driving at a low speed is not safe when a child is sitting on the driver's lap and holding the steering wheel.

The case was revealed as part of an extensive enforcement operation conducted over the weekend, in which dozens of reports were filed against drivers for various offenses, including driving under the influence, speeding, and driving vehicles with life-threatening safety defects.

In the police statement, they emphasized the rules for keeping children safe in a vehicle:

1. A minor must sit in their designated place in the vehicle and be buckled up according to their age and the instructions of the law.

2. A child sitting on the driver's lap impairs the driver's ability to control the vehicle, react to danger, and perform emergency maneuvers.

3. Even a short trip or driving at a low speed can end in disaster.

4. There is no "safe" trip when a child is sitting on the driver's lap and holding the steering wheel.
