UK Security Adviser Faces Scrutiny Over Wife's Social Media Posts
UK Conservative MP Alicia Kearns questioned National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell's position after his wife posted about Palestine Action on social media, sparking a political debate.
Political storm in the United Kingdom: Conservative MP Alicia Kearns has raised serious concerns regarding the ability of National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell to remain in his position following social media remarks made by his wife, Sarah Helm, concerning the Palestine Action group.
Kearns, serving as shadow home secretary, addressed an official letter to the Prime Minister asking whether Powell's position remains stable despite the Metropolitan Police concluding that no further action is required following his wife's comments. A Downing Street spokesperson responded: "These views are held by a private individual who does not represent the government in any capacity."
The controversy erupted after Helm wrote on X last Thursday regarding author Sally Rooney and Palestine Action. Although a police investigation found the post did not cross the criminal threshold, Kearns questioned the handling of classified national security information and whether full confidence remains in the adviser. Palestine Action was outlawed and designated as a terrorist organization in the UK last year, carrying sentences of up to 14 years in prison.
