UK Announces 600 Million Pound AI Investment Plan for Security and Bio-Defense
The UK government announced a 600 million pound investment plan to counter AI-related health and security threats, including a new bio-threat lab and cyber defense initiatives.

The British government announced a 600 million pound investment plan, equivalent to approximately 800 million dollars, aimed primarily at countering health and security threats associated with artificial intelligence. The initiative includes establishing a laboratory to detect biological threats, strengthening cyber defense systems, and investing in technological research and development.
According to Reuters, the largest share of the budget will be directed to a new biosecurity initiative. This includes allocating 100 million pounds for a laboratory that will use artificial intelligence to identify biological threats, and 65 million pounds for developing countermeasures against pathogens.
UK Minister for Artificial Intelligence Kanishka Narayan stated that the goal is to make the laboratory a leading international institution. According to him, it is designed to concentrate leading scientific expertise from around the world to protect humans from evolving biological threats.
Technology companies OpenAI and Anthropic will offer the initiative model usage credits of up to 200 million pounds. Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research, a London-based life sciences and artificial intelligence startup, will also provide additional assistance.
Strengthening Cyber Defense and Research
The plan also includes an additional 120 million pounds for the UK Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute, as well as 130 million pounds for new projects to improve the protection of critical infrastructure and the broader economy. Among other things, initiatives named National Cyber Shield and National Exposure and Real-Time Vulnerability Centre will be established under this framework.
Additional sections of the program include 60 million pounds for a fund to invest in British companies using artificial intelligence to advance robotics, autonomous systems, and industry, as well as 60 million pounds for related research and technology procurement contracts. 23 million pounds will be allocated to research on the economic impact of artificial intelligence, 18 million pounds for a new chip design academy, and 15 million pounds for a prize rewarding AI-based solutions to public policy problems, initially in healthcare.
Additionally, 30 million pounds will be transferred to regional authority heads to support local artificial intelligence activities. The UK National Cyber Security Centre will receive an undisclosed amount to expand its operations in Manchester.
