The third-quarter earnings season on Wall Street is underway, with investor focus returning to the technology sector, particularly companies operating in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.

In a recent market review published today by Swiss investment bank UBS, analysts examine key industry trends and provide critical insights into the growth models of various companies. The review paints a complex picture: while demand for AI services is at an all-time high, not all players are expected to benefit in the near term.

The Growing Divide in Cloud Computing

The bank points to a substantial and widening gap between young, specialized AI cloud computing providers known as "Neoclouds," and established traditional cloud giants (Hyperscalers) such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon.

While tech giants boast massive balance sheets enabling them to pour billions of dollars into infrastructure effortlessly, Neoclouds face mounting financing pressures that test their business growth models. The setup costs for data centers packed with advanced graphics processing units require vast capital, and the macroeconomic environment makes things difficult for smaller players.

High Demand Amid Financing Hurdles

However, UBS emphasizes that the financing difficulties of niche providers do not indicate market weakness. On the contrary, demand for computing power for AI applications remains robust and consistent. GPU rental prices maintain high intensity, and the overall impact on total sector spending is expected to remain limited, as computing power supply remains rigid and fails to keep pace with demand.

"We maintain a positive outlook on the structural growth of AI, while recognizing that financing and execution risks could reinforce each other across the AI infrastructure ecosystem. For investors, this background demands a selective approach," noted Mark Haefele, Chief Investment Officer at UBS Global Wealth Management.

Investment Strategy and Recommendations

Regarding practical investment strategy, the UBS recommendation is unequivocal. The bank calls for limiting exposure to Neoclouds facing construction and financing pressures, favoring Hyperscalers instead due to their robust financial backing.

Furthermore, Haefele recommends shifting investments toward quality hardware manufacturers and semiconductor companies that directly benefit from corporate AI spending. Alongside these, he believes investors should diversify their tech portfolios with exposure to more defensive and stable sectors, such as payment networks, selected software companies, and leading consumer electronics firms.
