Turkey's Ministry of Defense announced that the Turkish Air Force has completed a comprehensive aerial exercise south of Cyprus in international airspace. The drills involved fighter jets and support aircraft launched from various bases, unfolding amid escalating tensions surrounding the tightening strategic and security alliance between Israel, Greece, and Cyprus.
Ankara stated that the training flight concluded successfully and emphasized Turkey's determination to safeguard its rights and interests in the Mediterranean basin. While framed as routine, regional observers interpret the flights near Cyprus as a direct display of strength against the expanding alliance of its neighbors.
The Achilles Shield Agreement and Regional Defense
The timing coincides with unprecedented defense deals strengthening aerial superiority in the region. In late August, Israel and Greece signed the "Achilles Shield" agreement worth approximately 3 billion euros, under which Israel will deploy an advanced multi-layered air defense network for Athens, including David's Sling, SPYDER, and BARAK MX systems.
Simultaneously, the Cypriot military has integrated the Israeli BARAK MX system and is slated to showcase it during a military parade on October 1. Cypriot Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas stated earlier this month that Cyprus, Greece, and Israel all face a distinct shared security threat stemming from Turkish policy.
