Donald Trump Announces Diesel Deal with Russia to Lower Fuel Prices

US President Donald Trump announced that he has reached an agreement to purchase diesel fuel from Russia, marking a sharp pivot following years of intense American pressure on Moscow over the war in Ukraine. Trump wrote on Truth Social that he reached the agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a phone call that was originally scheduled to address a suspected plague-related death in Russia.

Instead, Trump stated that Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel, followed by another 500,000 tons in November and one million tons "immediately thereafter." Russia will supply an additional 3 million tons "within a short period of time," Trump added. The surprise announcement comes just a month after Trump signed sweeping sanctions legislation targeting Russia's energy economy, which helps finance its war in Ukraine.

Lowering prices for Americans, and especially for our wonderful farmers, ranchers and truck drivers, is my top priority.

Strategic Shifts and Global Energy Markets

Despite the recent sanctions targeting Russian banks, senior officials, and the shadow tanker fleet, the new announcement represents a complete reversal in strategy. Trump, who described the call with Putin as "very successful," also mentioned the naval blockade on Iran and asserted that global fuel prices will drop rapidly.

Neither the American nor the Russian statements mentioned the originally planned topic of discussion: the death of Daria Shypilova, who worked at a plague research institute in Irkutsk, Siberia, and the subsequent lockdowns. The World Health Organization has demanded clarification regarding the cause of her severe pneumonia and the pathogen that triggered the regional containment measures.
