Trump's Texas Senate Gamble on Ken Paxton Faces Growing Scandals
Donald Trump's endorsement of Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate race faces severe backlash as new scandals emerge, threatening the Republican Senate majority and raising hopes for a historic Democratic win.
When US President Donald Trump considered endorsing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the Senate race last spring, he was warned that embarrassing details about Paxton would likely surface.
According to a Wall Street Journal investigation, Trump dismissed the warnings, arguing that even more negative material would be found on Democratic candidate James Talarico. He gave his endorsement to Paxton, helping him win the Republican primary in May. Now, that decision may prove to be Trump's riskiest electoral gamble, potentially threatening the Republican majority in the Senate.
The Dubai New Year's Eve Revelations
Despite Paxton's efforts to paint his opponent as a radical leftist, Talarico maintains a slight lead in the polls. This raises a possibility that until recently was considered unthinkable: a Democratic candidate could win a statewide office in Texas for the first time since 1994. Meanwhile, embarrassing revelations about Paxton continue to mount.
The latest scandal involves a New Year's Eve 2024 celebration in Dubai, where Paxton spent the holiday with two fugitive Americans and a woman who is not his wife. As fireworks lit up the Dubai sky over the Burj Khalifa to welcome 2025, Paxton and his companion watched the show from a luxury balcony. According to the Wall Street Journal, the attendees included Anosh Ahmed and Sameer Suhail, who had been charged months earlier with federal healthcare fraud and had fled the United States. Ahmed donated $190,000 to Paxton's campaign, including $25,000 transferred just days after he was indicted.
Scandals and Political Resilience
Paxton, 63, has survived numerous controversies, and Trump's allies believe MAGA supporters will deliver him a victory on November 3. He was re-elected twice despite pending securities fraud charges. In 2020, eight of his deputies complained that he used his office to benefit a donor, leading his party to impeach him in 2023, though he was acquitted by the state Senate. Last year, his wife filed for divorce citing infidelity following reports of affairs.
The fugitive associates Paxton partied with in Dubai were accused of embezzling $15 million from a Chicago hospital, and Ahmed was later charged with a separate $195 million COVID-19 testing fraud. Both have since returned to the United States to face trial. Meanwhile, his Democratic opponent continues to attack Paxton over his extravagant lifestyle, which includes 19 foreign trips since 2022 accompanied by state-funded security to destinations such as Greece, Italy, South Africa, and Mexico.
