United States President Donald Trump announced last night, Saturday, that the USA has signed with Venezuela what he defined as the "greatest oil deal in world history." In a statement published on the Truth Social network, the President claimed that within the framework of the agreement, the USA has achieved control over most of the more than 65 billion barrels of proven oil reserves in Venezuela.

According to Trump, the agreement was formulated under his direction by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who worked in cooperation with the interim President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez, and with figures in the private sector. Trump claimed that control over the reserves was achieved "at no cost to the American taxpayer," and that the deal "more than doubles the oil reserves of the United States." According to him, the increase in oil supply is expected to lead to a significant decrease in fuel prices for Americans in the coming years.

The contacts were conducted in recent weeks. The announcement comes after it was reported in recent days that the Trump administration is conducting advanced contacts with the interim government in Venezuela to receive long-term access to a significant portion of the country's oil reserves. Reuters reported on Thursday that the parties discussed a framework under which oil fields in Venezuela would be guaranteed to the USA, which would be operated and developed by American companies. In reports preceding Trump's announcement, there was talk of 17 oil and gas fields containing about 90 billion barrels of proven reserves. Among the options examined was a long-term lease of the fields and subsequently their allocation to American energy companies.

At the same time, Reuters reported that the American energy giant Chevron is nearing the completion of a separate agreement to expand its operations in Venezuela, which will allow it to increase its operational control over projects in the country and expand its activity in the Orinoco Belt.

Trump claimed that the new agreement will also assist in the continued economic recovery of Venezuela and will strengthen the relations between the two countries:

"This deal will greatly strengthen the ever-tightening relationship between Venezuela and the United States."
