Trump Refused to Return to Understandings with Iran; NATO Fears Vulnerability to Russian Attack

While the US has shifted to a strategy of economic pressure on Iran and contacts continue between Tehran and Oman regarding the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, US President Donald Trump clarified on Thursday that no negotiations are being held. "We don't want to talk to them," the president told reporters in the Oval Office, "we are also not looking to meet with them." The Wall Street Journal reported that the administration has notified mediators repeatedly that it has no interest in returning to the terms of the June memorandum of understanding, complicating diplomatic efforts.
The stalemate frustrates Gulf states, whose economies and tourism have been hit by the war. Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed Al Thani arrived in Tehran to promote a "comfortable environment for dialogue." However, according to an AP report, the US military is experiencing a "beyond critical" shortage of advanced missile interceptors in Europe, largely due to the war in Iran. NATO officials confirmed that Patriot inventories are dangerously low, leaving alliance countries exposed to potential Russian attacks.
Economic Siege and Diplomatic Deadlock
Al Thani met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss proposals for the Strait of Hormuz, including a joint shipping corridor and mine clearance. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) maintained that "Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz remains firm."
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump "continues to keep all options on the table." She noted that following the destruction of Iranian military capabilities in Operation "Epic Fury," an "economic boycott" operation is now underway to dismantle the regime's economy.
