A heavy tragedy has struck the world of football in Thailand, after a young player lost his life on the pitch. Sophon Auwai (24), a winger for the Yala club in the country's third division, was killed instantly by a direct lightning strike during a match as part of a regional tournament in southern Thailand.

The incident occurred at the "Santipap" stadium in Narathiwat province, during a local cup semi-final match played under heavy rain. A powerful lightning bolt struck directly in the center of the field. Auwai collapsed immediately, and despite prolonged resuscitation attempts by players and medical teams on-site, it was not possible to save his life, and his death was pronounced shortly thereafter.

Beyond the tragedy of Auwai's death, the electric shock injured 12 other people who were on the field and nearby. Among the casualties evacuated to hospitals were 11 other players and a Malaysian citizen who was at the scene, with some suffering from injuries of varying degrees. The traumatic event led to the immediate suspension of the match, leaving the entire region in deep shock.
