Toronto: Shooting at a Jewish bakery and attack on another chain branch
Two branches of the Kiva's Bagel Bar chain were attacked in quick succession: shots were fired at one branch, and a window was shattered at another. Police are investigating the incidents as potential hate crimes.
Another antisemitic incident has occurred in Canada: Toronto police are investigating two events that took place on Sunday at two branches of the Jewish bakery chain Kiva's Bagel Bar, after both were attacked within a short time of each other. In one case, shots were fired at the branch, hitting a window, and in the second case, a window was shattered. There were no injuries.
Police are investigating a possible connection between the two events and are working to locate the suspects. The Hate Crimes Unit and the Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force are participating in the investigation.
Following the events, B'nai Brith Canada published a sharp statement, claiming the attacks are part of an escalating wave of antisemitism in the country. The organization emphasized that these bakeries serve as meeting places for families and that shooting at a Jewish business should concern all Canadians. B'nai Brith thanked the police for their quick response and noted that the attacks fit into a broader trend of violent extremism fueled by "anti-Zionist rhetoric, local criminal elements, Iran-backed proxies, and ISIS-inspired terrorism."
The organization called on Canada's leaders to unequivocally condemn the attacks, ensure security agencies have the necessary resources to protect the Jewish community, and establish a federal commission of inquiry to examine the rise in antisemitic incidents. According to their data, 27 violent antisemitic incidents have been documented in Canada since the beginning of 2026, more than double the number recorded in all of 2025 (10 cases).
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar addressed the incident:
"I am following with concern the worrying news from Toronto about further attacks against Jewish businesses. Fortunately, no one was hurt. This is the latest attack in a long and horrific series of violence and intimidation against the Canadian Jewish community. The government of Canada must confront this violent antisemitic wave!"
