A two-year-old child sustained severe finger injuries after inserting his hand into a working electric fan while visiting a sukkah during the holiday. The incident occurred within seconds as children played nearby.

Medical Response and Surgery

The family initially attempted to treat the heavy bleeding at home before volunteers from United Hatzalah advised immediate transfer to the emergency room. Upon arriving at the Edmond and Lily Safra Children's Hospital at Sheba Medical Center, doctors diagnosed a partial amputation of the pinky finger alongside bone fractures and tendon damage.

"The fan essentially crushed the area. In the first stage, we treated the pain, examined the wound, and assessed the damage," said Dr. Oren Feldman, director of the pediatric emergency department at Sheba Medical Center. "We sutured the finger to preserve the injured tissue, and after confirming its viability, we scheduled a more comprehensive surgery."

Specialists are currently working to repair the damaged nerves, tendons, and bone. While doctors remain optimistic about functional recovery, they note that lingering limitations in bending or sensation remain possible due to the severity of the trauma.

Rising Domestic Accidents

Medical staff emphasize that severe finger injuries among young children occur with alarming frequency. Dr. Feldman noted that medical teams treat similar pediatric trauma cases almost daily, ranging from minor lacerations to severe amputations caused by household appliances.

Experts urge parents to scan unfamiliar environments for hidden hazards, noting that children's natural curiosity often leads them toward unexpected dangers like fans, mixers, and sharp household items. In case of similar injuries, medical professionals advise gentle bandaging with clean gauze while strictly avoiding home remedies such as coffee or turmeric.
