Hard testimonies from the US military: Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth in a bind
Criticism continues against the US Secretary of Defense regarding the deterioration of service conditions aboard the aircraft carrier 'Abraham Lincoln'. This time, it comes from the political arena in the United States.
Democratic senators are demanding answers from US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth following reports of a severe deterioration in service conditions aboard the aircraft carrier 'Abraham Lincoln', stationed in the Arabian Sea as part of military operations against Iran. According to reports, crew members are dealing with food shortages, malfunctioning toilets, moldy showers, water contamination, and issues with the mail system that prevent support packages from families from reaching the sailors.
The ship has been on operational deployment since November, more than a month beyond the planned seven-month period. Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut reached out to Hegseth and the Acting Secretary of the Navy, Hung Cao, expressing 'serious concerns' regarding the extension of the mission and its impact on the crew.
Blumenthal emphasized that even under normal conditions, service on an aircraft carrier involves long shifts in a dangerous environment, alongside jet engines, heavy equipment, and a constant threat of attack. According to him, burnout and fatigue in such conditions could increase the risk of fatal errors.
The storm intensified after the 'Military Times' website reported that at least two sailors attempted to jump off the ship. The wife of one of them claimed that her husband had reached a state of severe burnout due to the service conditions and the prolonged deployment.
Hegseth rejected the claims and told reporters in Panama that the situation was 'completely misrepresented.' According to him:
«We ensure that every ship, every crew, and every commander has everything we can provide them at any moment».
He added that some deployments are longer than others and that he has 'tremendous respect and gratitude' for the sailors.
Already in April, claims were published regarding a decrease in the quantity and quality of food on the ship. Hegseth and the office of the Chief of Naval Operations denied the reports at the time, and the Secretary of Defense even labeled them 'fake news.'
Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona wrote that the reports of attempts to jump into the sea are 'disturbing.' According to him:
«Long deployments are hard. They are much harder when the mission is not well-defined and there is no end in sight».
Senator Ruben Gallego announced that he is promoting a bipartisan oversight visit to the aircraft carrier. Blumenthal argued that the extension of the deployment is particularly worrying because the Trump administration, according to him, has not sufficiently explained the goals of the military activity in Iran, and called on the administration to provide Congress with detailed answers on the subject.
