New Documentary Series Tlushim Explores Ethiopian Community Identity
A new three-part documentary series titled Tlushim premieres September 26 on Kan 11, exploring the emotional journey of Operation Moses' Generation 1.5 from the Ethiopian community.
A compelling new three-part documentary series titled Tlushim is set to premiere on September 26 on Kan 11 and the Kan Box digital platform. Created and directed by Avishai Malsan Tsegahon, the emotional project brings to the forefront the story of the Ethiopian community's Generation 1.5—the children of Operation Moses who grew up torn between the desire for integration and a lingering sense of alienation and suppression.
The series follows community members who arrived in Israel in 1984 as children, facing a society that often demanded the erasure of their identity and heritage. Now, as parents themselves and having led major community protests in recent years, they are reopening old wounds, reclaiming their ancestral culture, and rebuilding their personal and national narrative with pride.
Through painful and honest dialogues with their aging parents, the participants break through walls of silence to expose the trauma of the journey, absorption hardships, and enduring psychological scars. Notable participants include actress Aviva Negosa, known from the hit series Kupat Rashit, and stand-up comedian Shlomo Samuel. The series was produced by Yoav Leshem and Arik Tal from Beyond Creative.
Tlushim offers a broad, piercing, and uncompromising social look at deep processes within Israeli society. This documentary journey highlights the importance of giving space to all voices and stories, offering a fresh perspective on identity formation for the next generation.
