Campaign Posters Spark Outrage at Tiberias Memorial Site

Election campaign posters belonging to the Noam party were recently plastered on the facade of the memorial overlook dedicated to the late Staff Sergeant Adi Avitan in Tiberias. The incident has drawn fierce condemnation from the fallen soldier's family and local residents.

The memorial, which overlooks the Sea of Galilee, was established to commemorate Avitan, who was killed and abducted by Hezbollah in Har Dov in 2000. Following the discovery, the soldier's brother, Asaf Avitan, published a sharp critique on social media targeting the Noam party and its chairman, Avi Maoz.

"It is a disgrace that you choose to deface a memorial site for election propaganda," Asaf Avitan wrote, calling on Maoz to resign from his position.

Background of the 2000 Har Dov Abduction

Staff Sergeant Adi Avitan, a resident of Tiberias, served as a combat soldier in the Combat Engineering Corps. On October 7, 2000, during a routine security patrol along the border fence in the Har Dov area, his unit was ambushed by Hezbollah terrorists. Avitan, along with Staff Sergeant Benny Avraham and Staff Sergeant Omar Sawaid, were killed and their bodies were abducted to Lebanon.

For more than three years, the three soldiers were classified as missing in action, until their bodies were returned to Israel in February 2004 as part of a prisoner exchange deal. The recent placement of political materials on the memorial site has deeply hurt the bereaved family, renewing calls for accountability from political figures.
