Thailand has acquired the Arbel anti-drone system developed by Israel Weapon Industries (IWI), marking the system's first operational deployment in the Far East. The technology has already been integrated or is in the process of deployment in approximately 25 other countries worldwide.

According to sources, IWI is currently in discussions with additional military officials in Thailand regarding further orders for the Arbel system, as well as with several other regional nations. These negotiations are expected to materialize within the coming months.

Advanced Fire Control Technology

Arbel is a computerized fire control system designed to dramatically enhance lethality and hit probability. Upon pulling the trigger, the first round is fired mechanically like a standard rifle. Maintaining pressure on the trigger activates the system, which regulates the firing rate to an optimal pace, eliminating the need for the soldier to repeatedly manipulate the trigger.

Unlike other counter-drone solutions that require external platforms or specialized sensors, Arbel is integrated directly into the soldier's personal weapon. Developed in a plug-and-play configuration, the system requires only the replacement of the rifle's lower receiver, allowing troops to retain their familiar weapons and standard 5.56 mm ammunition.

Growing Defense Budgets in Asia

IWI's new deal reflects not only the global demand for effective drone interception solutions but also the broader growth of defense budgets across Asian nations amid rising regional tensions. Thailand operates various Israeli-made systems, including Elbit's Hermes drones and Israel Aerospace Industries' Barak MX air defense system.

Japan is expected to remain a major engine of growth for defense budgets in the coming years. Amid increasing regional security challenges, Tokyo has significantly expanded its defense spending, seeking advanced technologies, uncrewed systems, and strategic partnerships with international defense suppliers.
