Tesla Commences Mass Production and Deliveries of the Electric Semi Truck
Tesla has initiated mass production and deliveries of its Tesla Semi electric truck at Gigafactory Nevada, targeting an annual output of 50,000 units with key clients like PepsiCo.
Tesla has officially commenced deliveries of its electric semi-truck, the Tesla Semi, following a special event at its newly established facility near Gigafactory Nevada. This marks the entry of the heavy-duty vehicle into mass production, with Tesla projecting a manufacturing capacity of up to 50,000 trucks annually.
Fleet Customers and Leadership Vision
Alongside the launch event, Tesla highlighted initial commercial customers currently receiving deliveries, including PepsiCo, DHL, and US Foods. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, did not attend in person but addressed attendees via a pre-recorded video: "This will be a revolutionary truck capable of hauling the heaviest loads over very long distances. The waiting list is already very long." However, the company has not disclosed exact pricing or specific order backlogs.

Engineering Upgrades and Range Performance
During the event, Tesla executives detailed the engineering refinements implemented on the production-ready model. The Semi utilizes in-house manufactured 4680 battery cells housed in a pack capacity of 822 kilowatt-hours for the long-range variant and 548 kilowatt-hours for the base model. Energy consumption efficiency has been optimized to 1,700 watt-hours per mile.

Dan Priestley, manager of Semi truck engineering at Tesla, emphasized that the reported driving ranges were measured under real-world operating conditions at full gross weight. Lars Moravy, Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, noted that lighter payloads could potentially extend the range up to 965 kilometers.
Production Timeline and Delays
The road to mass production has faced prolonged delays. Initially unveiled as a concept in 2017, the Semi was originally scheduled for commercial production in 2019. Global supply chain disruptions and component shortages postponed the timeline. While a limited pilot fleet was delivered to PepsiCo in 2022, true mass production has only just commenced with the completion of the dedicated manufacturing facility.
