Tel Aviv Markets Navigate Volatility and Election Uncertainty Ahead of Vote
Financial markets show relative stability with rising volatility. Or Poria highlights how geopolitical tensions and upcoming elections shape Tel Aviv indices and foreign exchange.

Financial markets continue to exhibit relative stability alongside rising volatility, driven by diverse global and local factors. According to Or Poria, Chairman of Poria Finance, geopolitical tensions support high oil prices, yield fluctuations in bonds, and chip sector volatility.
In Israel, just a week before the elections, the local capital market often disconnects from international trends, underscoring the importance of geographical diversification to mitigate local risks.
Global Influences and Local Dynamics
Poria explains that geopolitical tensions often viewed negatively abroad can be perceived differently locally. For instance, a US-Iran agreement lowering short-term energy prices might be seen negatively in Israel because the Iranian threat persists. Additionally, the approaching elections heavily influence local indices.
"The market has been idling for months, driven by investors who view valuations as too high and trim exposure, versus those seeing dips as buying opportunities," Poria notes. Foreign exchange shows a slight weakening of the shekel amid dollar strength, with the dollar trading around 3.10 NIS and the euro below 3.50 NIS.
Tel Aviv Stock Exchange Performance
Trading on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange has featured volatility and divergence between large and second-tier stocks. In September, the TA-35 index rose 1.58%, while the TA-90 dropped 2.73%.
"The market shows resilience in major indices, but gains are unevenly distributed," market analysts point out.
By October 20, the TA-35 lost 1.96% over the preceding 30 trading days, yet maintained a 15.81% gain year-to-date. Uncertainty surrounding the elections, interest rate decisions, and global market shifts continue to shape trading.
