Tel Aviv Court Sentences Elderly Fraudster to 58 Months in Prison
A Tel Aviv court sentenced Israel Meir Chekler to 58 months in prison for scamming elderly victims across Petah Tikva and Haifa by posing as bank and credit card staff.

A Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court has sentenced Israel Meir Chekler to 58 months in prison for running a sophisticated scam targeting elderly citizens, defrauding 11 victims out of hundreds of thousands of shekels. Judge Shamai Becker delivered the verdict, emphasizing the predatory nature of the crimes against vulnerable populations.
Sophisticated Fraud Scheme
According to the amended indictment, between November 2024 and July 2025, Chekler contacted elderly victims using directory assistance. Posing as a representative of Bank Leumi or Isracard Group, he warned them of suspicious transactions before visiting their homes—sometimes dressed in a police uniform—to collect credit cards and PINs.
He operated across several cities including Petah Tikva, Haifa, Caesarea, and Kfar Shmaryahu. In total, he fraudulently obtained 205,214 shekels and attempted to steal an additional 296,161 shekels, using the funds to finance drugs and entertainment.
Deep Psychological Trauma
Victim impact statements presented to the court revealed severe psychological and functional distress. An 80-year-old victim from Petah Tikva described her ongoing terror:
"I couldn't sleep alone at night, I couldn't fall asleep without one of my daughters sleeping with me in bed. Lack of trust and anxiety accompany me to this day."
A couple from Kfar Shmaryahu noted that they lost their sense of security and basic trust in digital transactions and strangers, while a 90-year-old from Caesarea expressed profound emotional damage.
Prosecutors sought a prison sentence ranging from 4.5 to 8 years, citing Chekler's extensive criminal history. Judge Becker firmly rejected mitigation arguments based on the defendant's childhood hardships, stating:
"Now, in light of an eighth conviction... I closed my ears to hearing any more about childhood hardships."
In addition to the 58-month prison term, Chekler was ordered to pay a 10,000 shekel fine, 150,715 shekels in restitution for unrecovered funds, and 3,000 shekels in compensation to each individual victim.
