Tel Aviv Indictments Highlight Wave of Smartphone Thefts at City Beaches
Three indictments filed in Tel Aviv highlight a surge in beach thefts targeting unattended smartphones and valuables at popular coastal spots like Frishman, Bograshov, and Jerusalem beaches.
Three separate indictments filed yesterday (Tuesday) reveal the ongoing phenomenon of beach thefts in Tel Aviv, where thieves target unattended valuables and smartphones on the sand. Despite regular loudspeaker warnings from lifeguards, bathers continue to fall victim to quick-handed thefts while swimming or resting.
Indictments Detail Beach Thefts
The first indictment details an early morning incident at Frishman Beach, where three visitors left their mobile phones on the sand. Two defendants allegedly stole three devices: a black Samsung phone, an iPhone 14 Pro Max, and an iPhone 15 Pro Max. A vigilant bystander alerted the Israel Police, and the suspects were arrested with the stolen phones, which were subsequently returned to their owners.
A similar case occurred at Bograshov Beach. According to a second indictment, three bathers left their clothes and mobile phones on the sand before entering the water. A defendant allegedly took three iPhones: an iPhone 14 Plus, an iPhone 16, and an iPhone 15. A witness called the police, and the suspect was apprehended with the devices in his possession, leading to their recovery.
The third incident took place at Jerusalem Beach, targeting three minors aged 15 and 16. While they were in the water, their bags were left unattended. The accused allegedly stole two cell phones, a Rav-Kav transit card, AirPods, 100 shekels, and a credit card belonging to the father of one of the minors. He then hid the two mobile phones in a nearby bush.
Bathers Describe Constant Stress
Beachgoers report that the fear of theft has become an inescapable part of a day out by the sea. Roni, a frequent visitor to Tel Aviv beaches, recounted facing the threat twice within a few weeks.
«I didn't pay attention for two minutes and the phone was already gone. Within minutes it was turned off and impossible to track. A week ago, at the last second, I noticed someone approaching my belongings just before he reached into my bag,» Roni said. «You have to stay alert all the time, otherwise you go home without a phone. It is not fun when you come to the beach to rest and remain stressed the entire time.»
Lifeguards continue their efforts to warn beachgoers over public address systems, but as long as valuable property is left exposed on the sand while owners swim or look away, the short window of opportunity remains open for thieves.
