Syrian Authorities Arrest Key Suspect in 2013 Baniyas Massacre
Syrian authorities announced the arrest of Ali Kayali, a key figure from the ousted Assad regime and the prime suspect in the 2013 Baniyas massacre, as he attempted to flee the country.
The transitional government in Syria announced the arrest of Ali Kayali, a high-ranking official from the ousted regime of Bashar al-Assad and the prime suspect in the 2013 Baniyas massacre. According to official statements, Kayali was apprehended by security forces while attempting to flee across the border.
Kayali previously led a pro-regime militia known as the "Syrian Resistance," which fought alongside the military throughout the civil war. Earlier this month, the Ministry of Interior announced the capture of Jamal Trabolsi, Kayali's deputy within the militia.
The massacre in Baniyas took place between May 2 and May 3, 2013. Forces loyal to Assad, including Kayali's militia and other allied groups, carried out a mass killing in the city and the nearby village of Al-Bayda. Human rights organizations reported that at least 248 people were summarily executed, noting that the actual death toll is likely much higher.
