Sharon Stone Criticizes Sydney Sweeney Over Controversial Campaign
Sharon Stone has criticized Sydney Sweeney over a controversial nude sports betting campaign, marking a shift from her previous support for the young actress.
Sydney Sweeney finds herself in the spotlight once again as she continues to face backlash over a controversial nude campaign from earlier this month. This time, however, the criticism comes from someone close to home: veteran actress Sharon Stone, who did not hesitate to share her thoughts on the provocative advertisement.
A Shift in Perspective
Stone, who starred alongside Sweeney in the third season of Euphoria, called on the young actress to take responsibility for the controversial ad for the sports betting app Novig, in which she appears wearing very little.
I think taking responsibility for her actions is up to Sweeney, it's not my job to judge her for them, Stone told People magazine.
Stone continued, emphasizing the importance of respecting female athletes: The role of women is to encourage and support those who have made it through and become champions in women's sports. We cannot demean women's sports just to attract the attention of men so they can gamble.
Past Support Versus Current Backlash
This is not the first time Stone has commented on the controversy surrounding Sweeney. However, what makes the remarks surprising is the shift in tone. Last year, Stone reacted quite differently to an American Eagle jeans commercial starring Sweeney.
It is completely fine to use what Mother Nature gave you, Stone said regarding the previous daring campaign, adding, It is really okay to utilize every drop of sexiness you have and go all the way with it.
Stone is certainly not the first to speak out against Sweeney. After sharing the provocative ad on her Instagram account, the actress suffered a drop of about 200,000 followers. A number of prominent sportswomen, including boxer Skye Nicolson and Olympic swimmer Ariarne Titmus, also sharply criticized her.
Despite the intense wave of criticism, Sweeney has not apologized at any point and has already responded to her detractors in her own way. She shared famous nude photographs of legendary sportswomen like Serena Williams, Ronda Rousey, and Megan Rapinoe on social media, in what was widely seen as a rebuttal to claims that her campaign undermines women's sports.
