The opening of the fourth quarter in the financial markets presents an interesting trend reversal led by global markets. In a recent review published by Mathieu Racheter, Head of Equity Strategy Research at Swiss investment bank Julius Baer, it turns out that Swiss stocks recorded a surge of 5.6% since the beginning of October.

According to his review, these performances significantly outperform the European stock market, which recorded an increase of 2.9%, and the US market, which recorded a slight decrease of 0.1%, thereby narrowing the yield gap since the beginning of the year.

The bank clarifies that Switzerland's competitive advantage lies in the unique sectoral composition of the local market. Healthcare services and defensive consumer goods account for about 40% and 15% of the Swiss market respectively, while exposure to technology is minimal and the oil and gas sector is completely absent.

Sectoral Shifts and Market Dynamics

Earlier this year, rising oil prices and high bond yields weighed on defensive stocks and supported energy producers and technology companies driven by the AI revolution. However, once bond yields began to decline slightly since the beginning of October, Swiss healthcare and defensive consumer stocks surged by 7.5% and 10.3% respectively.

According to Julius Baer's assessment, given the high concentration of many stock portfolios around the artificial intelligence and technology sector, it is appropriate and necessary for investors to diversify their exposure to this risk. If expectations for massive investments in AI dissipate or weaken, this could create downward pressure on bond yields and oil prices.

Investment Outlook and Recommendations

Bottom line, Julius Baer maintains an Overweight recommendation for Swiss stocks. Analysts at the bank note that the ongoing improvement in the momentum of earnings forecast updates for Swiss companies strengthens the fundamental investment argument, as the defensive sector composition provides a safety net and a vital counterweight to high exposure to technology and artificial intelligence fields.

Julius Baer is one of the oldest and leading financial management and private banking institutions in Switzerland and globally.
