The video was apparently captured during celebrations marking the branch's third anniversary, where oil bottles were distributed to customers alongside special promotions. Stewards were seen directing shoppers into two distinct lines.
The publication triggered a fierce online debate. While some defenders argued that customers formed separate queues voluntarily and the store does not enforce mandatory segregation, many users expressed anger and mocked the state of affairs in the country.
Masala Bazaar specializes in Halal meats, fresh produce, frozen goods, and household items. According to the 2021 census, about one in ten residents in Romford is Muslim, and over 26% belong to Black or Asian minority groups.
