S&P 500 Concentration Reaches Unprecedented Levels

The stock market is currently being heavily sustained by just three technology stocks. The S&P 500 index has never been as concentrated in such a small number of companies as it is today: Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft together account for over 21% of the entire index, according to data from Creative Planning.

The importance of these three players to the index's performance has reached unprecedented dimensions. For comparison, in the mid-1980s, the industrial giants of the time—IBM, AT&T, and ExxonMobil—were the only ones operating on a similar scale, accounting for a combined 13.4% of the total index at their peak.

Drivers of the Tech Rally and Record Valuations

The central factor that pushed the shares of Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft upward over the past month, driving their concentration in the S&P 500 to an all-time high, is a succession of positive news. AI chip giant Nvidia unveiled a staggering $150 billion stock buyback program two weeks ago—the largest share repurchase increase in history, bringing the company's total authorized buybacks to $235 billion. Consequently, the company's shares are currently hovering around record levels.

Apple's stock is also trading near all-time highs, enjoying a particularly impressive winning streak since the company's product unveiling event in mid-September. During the announcements, Apple introduced the iPhone Duo—a passport-like device that opens and closes like a book, featuring a 5.4-inch front screen that unfolds into a massive 7.6-inch display, ideal for watching movies, gaming, work, and multitasking. Alongside this device, the company also unveiled the new iPhone 18 series and the updated AirPods model.

Meanwhile, Microsoft's stock also surged beyond expectations, despite not experiencing the intense news flow seen in the cases of Nvidia and Apple. Wall Street analysts continue to upgrade their earnings forecasts for Microsoft for this year and next, citing expectations that technological demand in the AI sector will continue to accelerate and fuel robust sales in the company's cloud service, Azure.
