South African Police Arrest Suspect in Murder of Runner Elizabeth Mosakgomo
South African police arrested a suspect possessing a murdered runner's watch as investigations continue into a wave of women's killings in Gauteng.
South African police have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the murder of 38-year-old runner Elizabeth "Tsonzu" Mosakgomo, whose body was discovered days after she went missing during a routine training run in Kempton Park. Police confirmed that a suspect was arrested after being found in possession of Mosakgomo's Garmin watch, though he currently faces charges of possessing stolen property rather than murder as the investigation continues.
Expanding Investigation and Arrests
The case has drawn intense public scrutiny amid a broader wave of violence against women in the Ekurhuleni region of Gauteng province, where the bodies of at least 12 women have been discovered since July. Local media reports indicated that up to four suspects were detained over the weekend in connection with stolen items belonging to victims, though law enforcement officials have yet to formally link all the cases or confirm the existence of a serial killer.
"Behind each of these horrific deaths was a woman—a daughter, a mother, a sister, a friend—whose life had value," stated South African President Cyril Ramaphosa during a national address on the crisis.
Presidential Intervention
The mounting death toll prompted a personal intervention by President Cyril Ramaphosa, who assured the public that the investigations are receiving top priority. While forensic experts, detectives, and psychologists continue to examine DNA evidence and communication data, the central questions regarding whether a single serial offender or multiple criminals are responsible remain open.
