Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, has been named the top European city break destination for 2027 by the European Best Destinations platform. Beating popular tourism hubs like Lisbon and Copenhagen, the Balkan capital's new title comes as a welcome development for Israeli travelers seeking safe and affordable destinations.

Security and Rising Popularity

Amid rising antisemitism and security concerns across Europe, Sofia has positioned itself as an accessible, warm, and secure sanctuary. Bulgarian authorities have prioritized the safety of visitors, ensuring that key sites are heavily guarded. Local officials have explicitly stated that Israeli tourists are welcome and embraced in the country.

This sense of security, combined with a short two-and-a-half-hour flight and remarkably affordable prices, has translated into tangible growth. Data from the Municipality of Sofia indicates a 50% surge in visitors from Israel in 2025, placing Israelis among the top five foreign tourist groups in the city.

Affordable Flights and Accommodation

Sofia's major advantage for Israeli travelers lies in its cost-effectiveness. A comparison of direct flights from Tel Aviv to Sofia for the December 2026 holiday season reveals several affordable options:

  • Wizz Air offers the cheapest direct low-cost round-trip flights around December, starting at approximately $140–$160 for a basic ticket.

  • Israir provides the most cost-effective Israeli option, with direct round-trip flights during the Christmas period ranging around $160–$190.

  • Arkia and Bluebird Airways offer direct flights starting from $190–$230, while full-service carriers like El Al and Bulgaria Air start around $230–$260 and up.

Urban Renewal and European Rankings

"This international recognition reflects hard work that brings back pride to both residents and visitors," noted Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev regarding the city's nomination for 2027.

The city's selection, decided by over 11,000 voters, highlights Sofia's transformation from a post-Soviet metropolis into a modern, vibrant urban hub. It offers a thriving culinary scene, contemporary cafes, rich nightlife, and fascinating history, ranging from the Serdika metro station featuring Roman ruins to the iconic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.

Rounding out the top ten destinations in the European Best Destinations ranking were Lisbon in second place, Copenhagen in third, Cannes in fourth, and Basel in fifth. Bristol, Leuven, Milan, Calpe, and Verona completed the rest of the list.
