Hidden Bacteria: Slushie Machines Across Israel Reveal Alarming Hygiene Issues
An investigation into slushie machines across Israel reveals alarming hygiene standards, with laboratory tests showing bacterial counts twenty times above the legal limit.

Slushies and iced coffees are a staple of Israeli daily life, especially during hot summer days. Found in kiosks, gas stations, and snack bars, these refreshing drinks are a favorite among children. However, an investigation by mako health has revealed alarming hygiene standards in several slushie machines across the country, raising serious public health concerns.
Alarming Findings and Laboratory Results
During the investigation, reporters observed disturbing sights: accumulated dirt, black spots, drink residue, and even ants near the dispensing taps. To verify these concerns, a slushie sample from a kiosk in northern Tel Aviv was sent to a microbiological laboratory. The results showed a total bacterial count of 200,000 per gram—twenty times higher than the Israeli standard limit of 10,000.
Dr. Dan Barel, head of the public health microbiology laboratories, explained that such a severe deviation indicates poor sanitary conditions, unclean equipment, and substandard raw materials. Experts warn that contaminated beverages can harbor dangerous pathogens, including Salmonella and Listeria, posing significant health risks ranging from mild stomach aches to severe dehydration and hospitalization.
The consumer can drink the beverage and everything will seem fine to them, but in practice, they might be drinking a drink contaminated with bacteria, warns Dr. Khozeima Khamaisi.
Hidden Dangers and Expert Recommendations
Health experts emphasize that the inner components of slushie machines—such as pipes, seals, and internal tanks—are difficult to clean and often harbor mold and bacteria out of sight. External cleanliness is no guarantee of internal safety. Medical professionals urge business owners to thoroughly clean, sanitize, and dry machinery daily, while advising consumers to closely inspect the cleanliness of establishments before purchasing beverages.
