South Korean memory chip manufacturer SK Hynix, a key supplier to Nvidia, reported record third-quarter results for 2026 on Wednesday, driven by surging demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure and rising memory prices.

Operating profit skyrocketed more than sevenfold year-over-year to 83.3 trillion won, roughly $62.8 billion, compared to 11.4 trillion won in the same period last year. Revenue surged by 328%, reaching 104.6 trillion won.

Long-Term Contracts Covering Over Half of Production

Alongside the financial results, the company provided an indicator of future demand by signing long-term agreements with 14 major clients, covering more than half of its production capacity for 2027 and 2028. SK Hynix reiterated its forecast that demand will continue to outpace supply through 2030, noting this is a company projection rather than a market guarantee.

The earnings report stated that shipments of HBM4 memory expanded during the quarter. These memory modules are designed to transfer massive amounts of data at high speeds, a critical requirement for AI systems. The company expects HBM4 shipments and revenue to surpass the previous generation, HBM3E, in the fourth quarter.

Massive Shareholder Return Program

SK Hynix plans shareholder returns totaling approximately 100 trillion won, or about $75.4 billion, throughout 2026. The program includes dividends, share buybacks, and share cancellations, a portion of which was announced in August. The company stated it intends to distribute the majority of the profits realized this year from its investment in Kioxia.

The results highlight the distinction between heavy spending on AI infrastructure and the revenues it generates for equipment and chip suppliers. In the case of SK Hynix, demand is already translating directly into sales and profits. Moving forward, the key question is whether the company can maintain profitability as it expands production, with plans to significantly increase capital expenditures next year while aligning them with demand and economic viability.
