Shopify CEO Admits AI Push Backfired With 'Slop Grenades'
Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke admits that forcing aggressive AI adoption backfired, flooding the company with unverified "slop grenades" of low-quality code and emails.

Shopify CEO Admits AI Policy Backfire
When tech executives push for aggressive artificial intelligence adoption to boost productivity, they often overlook the hidden operational costs. Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke recently revealed that his mandate requiring managers to prove AI could not perform desired tasks before requesting new hires resulted in unexpected organizational friction. Instead of streamlining operations, the policy flooded internal channels with unverified AI-generated content and code.
The Rise of 'Slop Grenades'
In a recent interview on The Knowledge Project podcast, Lütke explained that the pressure to leverage artificial intelligence transformed workplace laziness from a lack of output into an overwhelming surplus of low-quality material. Employees began deploying AI tools to generate emails and software code without proper oversight or personal accountability. Lütke referred to these problematic submissions as "slop grenades" hurled between colleagues, noting that the resulting debris creates massive bottlenecks for teams forced to review substandard work.
"The new form of lazy work is not a reduction in output, but too much output," said Tobias Lütke.
This phenomenon highlights a growing trend across the technology sector. Duolingo leadership faced a similar realization after mandating widespread AI integration and replacing contract workers with automated systems, only to admit later that the strategy generated excessive digital noise. As companies navigate the AI boom, executives are discovering that unbridled automation often sacrifices quality for sheer volume, creating more administrative overhead than it eliminates.
