Eight Israeli Departments Enter Top 50 in 2026 Shanghai Academic Rankings
Eight Israeli academic departments entered the global top 50 in the 2026 Shanghai Ranking, down from 11 in previous years. The Hebrew University Department of Communication led national entries at 17th place globally.
Eight Israeli academic departments ranked among the global top 50 in the 2026 Shanghai Ranking of Academic Subjects, published this month. Leading the Israeli entries is the Hebrew University Department of Communication at 17th place, followed by the Technion Department of Aerospace Engineering at 19th place. However, this represents a decline from 11 departments in the top 50 during 2023 and 2024.
Notable Shifts in Global Academic Rankings
In the broader university rankings published last August, Israel saw a drop from three universities in the global top 100 to just two, as the Technion slipped out of the leading tier. The Weizmann Institute of Science (71st) and the Hebrew University (89th) maintained stable positions. Meanwhile, the latest subject-specific rankings show a decrease in top-tier representation, with the Hebrew University maintaining four departments in the global top 50, followed by the Technion with two, and the Weizmann Institute and the University of Haifa with one each.
Surprising Breakthroughs and Areas of Concern
A major surprise in the 2026 results is the University of Haifa Department of Public Administration, which climbed to 28th place globally, ranking first among Israeli institutions in this field. Mathematics remains one of the two disciplines where Israel boasts two universities in the top 50, with the Hebrew University at 24th and the Weizmann Institute advancing steadily to 38th place.
"The ranking highlights our strong global standing in specific research areas, yet mounting challenges in computer science and civil engineering require immediate strategic attention," academic analysts noted.
Conversely, concerns persist over declining positions in computer science, where Tel Aviv University is the sole Israeli institution in the top 100 (ranked 76–100), and civil engineering, where no local institution made the top tier. In business administration, Tel Aviv University stands alone among Israeli universities, placing in the 301–400 bracket.
