Movie theaters are packed to capacity, so let's make sure we know at least some of what there is to know about the films that conquered the screens this summer.
Before the summer began, everyone predicted a few things: that it would be hot as hell, that there would be more matches in the World Cup than ever before, and that Donald Trump would change his mind every second. One thing that wasn't necessarily predicted is that movie theaters would be packed to capacity—after all, after the coronavirus, everyone said that cinema was dead and Netflix had buried it for good, right?
And here, this summer is breaking records around the world and here with us too. Two weeks ago, for example, 400,000 tickets were sold here in one weekend. For "Odyssey" it is impossible to get tickets two weeks in advance for IMAX screenings in Rishon LeZion, "Checkout" is approaching a million tickets, "Spider-Man" turned out to be an extraordinary blockbuster even by the standards of superhero worlds, the horror genre became a favorite among Israeli youth with hits like "Obsession", and this is just a partial list. Even a quality Norwegian film like "Sentimental Value" continues to run successfully here.
Every weekend more and more new films are released here—this weekend, for example, "The Room Next Door" is released, the new one by Pedro Almodóvar who always finds an audience here, not to mention a billion cinematic treats for children. In the midst of this race, let's take a moment to breathe, and make sure we know at least some of what we need to know about this hysterical and historic summer.
