Rabbi Farber was among the Haredi rabbis who supported military service for yeshiva and kollel students.
As previously reported, Rabbi Yaakov Aaron Farber passed away overnight between Sunday and Monday at the age of 32. A father of six from Givat Ze'ev, he had been battling cancer for several years.
Rabbi Farber founded the 'Maalot Tzur' project, a unique track designed to integrate Haredim into military service while maintaining a strict Torah lifestyle. He began his public work several years ago under the guidance of his rabbi, the Admor of Belz, and Rabbi David Leibl.
Following October 7, Rabbi Farber sought solutions that balanced the needs of the IDF and the economy with the unique requirements of the Haredi public. He worked to bridge gaps with military officials and the Ministry of Labor, insisting on adapted conditions, including exemptions from uniforms, Mehadrin-level kosher food, and dedicated Torah study time.
In interviews, he emphasized the importance of consulting with rabbis and adhering to Torah values, while maintaining a willingness to find common ground:
"If people want to get along, it is possible. You just need to want to. For everything, one can find a way to bridge the gaps, if one understands the other."
The programs he led trained dozens of Haredi servicemen in engineering and technology, ensuring their economic future while strictly preserving their spiritual character.
In the final months of his life, protesters from the 'Jerusalem Faction' demonstrated against him at his home several times due to his vigorous efforts to integrate Haredim into military service.
