Lionel Scaloni is reportedly close to extending his contract as coach of the Argentina national team for the coming years. Following a period of uncertainty after the painful defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, Argentine media report that talks between the coach and the local federation have advanced significantly, with both sides nearing an agreement.
Future and Contract Negotiations
Immediately after the World Cup final, Scaloni left a massive question mark regarding his future. He stated at the time that he still needed to speak with the president, raising the possibility that he would end a tenure that began back in 2018. However, his stance has shifted in recent months.
According to TyC Sports, there is strong optimism within the Argentine Football Association regarding a contract extension. One of the options being considered is a two-year deal until the 2028 Copa America, with an option to extend through the 2030 World Cup, where Argentina will serve as one of the six host nations.
"I have a contract until December and then I will probably finish... I still need to talk to the president," Scaloni said after the 2026 World Cup final.
Staff Changes and Next Generation
If Scaloni stays, his coaching staff is expected to undergo changes. Walter Samuel is slated to leave his role as assistant coach to pursue an independent managerial career, forcing Scaloni to rebuild part of his technical team.
Meanwhile, the coach is already looking toward the next generation. Argentina is scheduled to face Bolivia, Burkina Faso, and Benin in upcoming friendlies, with the final match anticipated to be Lionel Messi's farewell appearance for the national team.
