A new study reveals the secrets of longevity in a remote village on the island of Sardinia, which has become a new "Blue Zone," a global hub for high life expectancy. In the village of Bolotana, women show exceptional survival rates, averaging 91 years after passing the age of 70. These findings place the village in second place worldwide for female longevity, right after Hong Kong.

Exceptional Longevity and Demographics

Researchers visiting Bolotana were surprised to find that out of 2,262 residents, ten have reached the age of 100—a concentration eleven times higher than the average in the United States. The data are particularly striking among women: one in every seven women who reaches the age of 70 is expected to celebrate her 100th birthday.

"The key is a combination of healthy habits integrated into daily routine, in a way that requires no special effort, but serves as a natural part of life," researchers noted.

Diet and Natural Physical Activity

What is the secret charm of the villagers? According to researchers, the answer lies in a combination of factors. The local diet is 90% plant-based and includes plenty of legumes, pasta, garden vegetables, olives, and olive oil. There are no fast-food restaurants in the village, helping residents maintain a healthy traditional menu.

In addition, although there is no gym, residents get natural daily physical activity thanks to the mountainous terrain of the area. Strong family support, community cohesion, and moderate wine consumption also contribute to these remarkable health outcomes.
