Russian Propaganda Targets US Midterms with Israel Narrative

Ahead of the upcoming US midterm elections, research by digital intelligence firm Alethea reveals that the Kremlin is exploiting the state of Israel as a divisive wedge issue to polarize American voters. The Russian disinformation network known as Doppelgänger has flooded social media platforms with hundreds of thousands of posts designed to foster the narrative that bipartisan support for Israel is collapsing.

The overarching objective of this influence campaign is to portray the Democratic Party as having turned its back on Jerusalem, thereby undermining Democratic candidates while boosting Republicans. Investigators identified over 50 fake personas, posing as Israeli women, alongside a network of more than 1,000 fictional accounts that injected divisive messaging into high-traffic threads, generating approximately 150,000 posts and comments.

Global Scope and Platform Response

Alethea noted that similar content has been directed at voters in Israel and France ahead of their respective electoral cycles. US intelligence officials confirmed heightened Russian interference across these nations, though they emphasized there is no indication of physical or electronic tampering with actual voting systems.

"It is very hard to hack into computer systems, but it is very easy to lie online," explained Alethea founder Lisa Kaplan regarding the psychological warfare originating from Moscow.

Platform X announced the suspension of 13,000 fake accounts linked to operations originating from Russia, Iran, and China. However, security experts stress that the sheer volume and persistence of modern disinformation campaigns continue to severely challenge mitigation efforts across Western democracies.
