Rom Braslavski, a survivor of captivity in the Gaza Strip, visited the Western Wall and published an emotional personal statement detailing the psychological toll, moments of despair, and unwavering faith that sustained him during his ordeal.
Reflection at the Western Wall
Standing at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, Braslavski expressed profound emotions regarding his time in captivity under Hamas. He described battling feelings of guilt and moments of vulnerability during his imprisonment.
"Forgive me, Creator of the world, I reached the Western Wall in our beautiful land to say I am sorry. Sorry that I did not do more at the Nova festival, sorry for all the times in captivity that I broke, that I doubted, that I lost faith," Braslavski wrote.
Resistance and Faith in Captivity
Braslavski detailed the humiliation and physical hardships he endured, noting that his captors repeatedly pressured him to convert to Islam, a demand he firmly rejected. He emphasized that despite the brutal conditions, he maintained his spiritual connection.
He compared his trials to the Binding of Isaac, stating that he felt he passed the divine test of faith. He also expressed gratitude for surviving the ordeal, attributing his endurance to divine protection.
From Deir al-Balah to Freedom
Concluding his message, Braslavski contrasted his situation during the previous Yom Kippur, when he was held captive in Deir al-Balah in the Gaza Strip, with his current freedom in Israel.
"A year ago, on the last Yom Kippur, I was a captive in Deir al-Balah, and today I am free at the Western Wall," he concluded. "Thank You, God, for redeeming me from the house of bondage."
