Mob boss Riko Shirazi is expected to be released from prison at the end of the week after serving roughly a decade behind bars following his convictions in a major financial case and Case 512. While his official release date falls on Saturday, October 3, intelligence and prison authorities have considered moving his release forward to the night between Thursday and Friday to minimize media exposure and prevent potential security threats.
Shirazi, who spent years as a prominent figure in the underworld of Netanya and central Israel, was imprisoned after being convicted in a major financial fraud case. In December 2015, the Tel Aviv District Court sentenced him to eight years in prison and a one-million-shekel fine for tax offenses, money laundering, and operating a fictitious invoice network that involved tens of millions of shekels.
The Underworld Balance of Power
Later, as part of a plea bargain in Case 512, Shirazi was convicted of assisting in the 2003 murder of Guy Yehezkel in Germany and conspiracy to assassinate Asi Abutbul in Prague in 2004. He received a nine-year sentence, much of which was served concurrently with his financial crimes sentence. As his release approaches, both police and underworld elements are closely monitoring his next moves.
"He is an old-school criminal with strict standards, rules, and most importantly, respect," prison officials noted, adding that he always maintained discipline and respect for the staff behind bars.
Intelligence officials emphasize, however, that good behavior in prison does not necessarily translate to a low risk upon release. Police units, including Lahav 433 and the Central District, have treated Shirazi as a high-profile target for years. Criminal figures who operated in Netanya while he was incarcerated have closely watched for his return to a local landscape now populated by a younger generation of criminals.
The Shadow of Revenge
One of the most tragic chapters of Shirazi's imprisonment was the murder of his son, Shai Shirazi, who was shot dead while sitting in a car in northern Tel Aviv. Shirazi's requests to attend his son's funeral were denied, and Michael Levi was later convicted and sentenced to 24 years in prison for the killing. Following the murder, Shirazi spent years under severe isolation conditions due to intelligence assessments regarding ongoing blood feuds.
While criminal defense attorneys suggest that Shirazi might seek a different path, law enforcement sources warn that old scores in the underworld are rarely forgotten. As he steps out after a decade behind bars, police and underworld actors alike are bracing for potential shifts in Netanya's fragile criminal equilibrium.
