Respiratory Illnesses Surge Across Israel

In recent weeks, respiratory illnesses accompanied by coughing, runny noses, fever, and fatigue have surged across Israel, affecting workplaces, schools, and kindergartens. Family medicine experts note that entire families are falling ill, with symptoms varying among household members.

Dr. Tal Gizonterman, a family medicine specialist with the Clalit Health Services in the Dan - Petah Tikva district, explains that kindergartens are major hubs for transmission. Children often touch shared surfaces and cough near one another, spreading viruses rapidly. He advises individuals experiencing fever and coughing to stay home to prevent further infection.

Post-Viral Cough and Nighttime Spikes

Doctors point out that coughing often persists long after the acute phase of an illness has passed. Dr. Dana Flurtin explains that post-viral cough can last for weeks or even months, frequently worsening at night due to physiological changes and airway hypersensitivity.

"In some patients, coughing lasts for three to eight weeks after the acute illness subsides, causing frequent awakenings and a significant drop in sleep quality," Dr. Flurtin noted.

Pediatrician Dr. Amir Mendelson notes that September and October mark a seasonal transition where asthma cases and various pathogens begin to rise, alongside early cases of influenza.

Recognizing Complications and Prevention

While most respiratory infections resolve on their own, physicians warn that simple colds can occasionally lead to secondary bacterial infections or severe complications requiring hospitalization. Key warning signs include high fever, shortness of breath, rapid breathing, and severe headaches.

Medical experts recommend staying home while symptomatic, wearing masks when necessary, and getting vaccinated according to official health guidelines to curb the seasonal spread.
