From Battlefield to Pitch: How Israeli Reservists Find Unity Through Soccer
The Toto Reservists League brings hundreds of Israeli reservists from the battlefield to the soccer pitch, offering a therapeutic sports framework to maintain military bonds.

After a prolonged period during which hundreds of thousands of Israelis were repeatedly called up for reserve duty, a unique initiative has emerged to channel the camaraderie and bonds of military units onto the soccer pitch. The Toto Reservists League is a joint sports, educational, and community project by the Toto and the Israel Football Association, managed by "HaChalutz - Education Through Sport". In this league, soccer teams are formed based on military units, bringing the spirit of camaraderie and values from the battlefield to the field, where soccer serves as a rehabilitative and therapeutic platform.
More Than Just a Soccer Game
The idea behind the league is rooted in the power of sports to foster human interaction and strengthen a sense of belonging. Instead of military service remaining merely a shared memory, it becomes the foundation for a soccer team that carries on the unit's spirit in civilian life. This creates a space where reservists can maintain the connections forged during service, meet fellow unit members, and bond with others who have shared similar experiences.
"The goal is to provide a sense of stability through a healthy, athletic routine, and to maintain connection with friends from the army," explains Maayan Padan, founder of the Toto Reservists League.
Expansion and Community Support
The project is funded by the Toto as part of its "Social Pitch" initiative, which promotes community goals and uses the unifying power of sports to drive social change and empower communities. The scope of the project continues to grow from season to season, offering new avenues like a basketball league for reservists to stay active and connected.
