Rare Pokémon Card Illustrated by Six-Year-Old Sells for $156,000 at Auction
A rare 2010 Pokémon card illustrated by a six-year-old sold for $156,000 at auction, marking an 18-fold price increase in just three years.
A rare Pokémon card illustrated by Megu Taniguchi when she was only six years old sold for $156,000 at an auction that concluded on September 27 at Fanatics Collect. The card, which achieved the highest PSA 10 Gem Mint rating, is considered a highly sought-after collector's item due to its extreme rarity and unique backstory.
The item dates back to 2010, specifically the Pokemon Illusion's Zorua Design Contest Promo, in the Kindergarten Winner edition. The artwork features the characters Zorua and Pikachu riding together on a bus, created as part of a Pokémon card design competition held to celebrate the release of the film Zoroark: Master of Illusions.
The Rise in Value and Rarity
Taniguchi won the kindergarten category in the contest, with winners receiving a cash prize alongside a limited print run of the cards they designed. According to reports, only around 100 copies of this specific version were ever printed. Unlike standard trading cards sold in commercial booster packs, this card was distributed solely to the competition winners, making it exceptionally desirable among serious collectors.
The staggering final price highlights the meteoric rise in value for rare collectible items within the hobby. In 2023, an identical copy—also boasting a PSA 10 rating—sold for a mere $8,700. In just three years, the valuation has skyrocketed by nearly 18 times.
"The transaction exemplifies the transformation of the Pokémon card market from a simple children's game into a multi-million-dollar international collectibles industry."
Evolution of the Collectibles Market
The Pokémon card market has evolved significantly since the 1990s, transitioning from a beloved children's pastime into a global investment arena where rare items fetch astronomical sums. Key drivers include pure nostalgia, the involvement of high-profile influencers like Logan Paul, and specialized auction house activity. Aside from scarcity, the physical condition of the card remains paramount, with a PSA 10 Gem Mint grade serving as the gold standard of preservation.
Among the most legendary cards in the hobby is the elusive Pikachu Illustrator, which previously commanded over $5 million. Much like Taniguchi's childhood creation, these anomalous pieces stand outside standard commercial printing sets, cementing their legendary status and astronomical market value.
