Israel Health Ministry Issues Urgent Rabies Warning in Western Galilee
The Ministry of Health issued an urgent rabies warning for the Western Galilee after discovering a rabid dog near Shefa-Amr, urging anyone exposed since late August to seek immediate medical treatment.
The Ministry of Health has issued an urgent warning to residents of the Western Galilee following the confirmation of a rabid dog in an agricultural area near the town of Shefa-Amr. According to health officials, the infected animal is a large, mixed-breed dog with black and brown fur.
Urgent Preventive Measures
In response to the incident, medical authorities have initiated rapid preventive operations in the field. Three individuals who came into direct contact with the infected dog have been referred for prompt rabies prophylaxis. Meanwhile, a comprehensive epidemiological investigation remains ongoing to trace all potential exposures.
"Anyone who came into contact with the dog or with a stray animal in the area between August 28, 2026, and September 14, 2026, is requested to urgently contact the Acre Health Bureau or the nearest health office," the Ministry of Health announced.
Guidelines for Parents and Pet Owners
Health officials emphasize that anyone seeking care outside regular working hours should report directly to a hospital emergency room without needing an appointment. Parents in the region are strongly urged to speak with their children and verify whether they interacted with any stray animals during the specified timeframe.
Pet owners whose domestic animals may have been exposed to the rabid dog must immediately consult a municipal veterinarian for further instructions. In the event of any animal bite or scratch, experts advise washing the affected area thoroughly with running water and soap for approximately ten minutes before applying disinfectant and seeking medical evaluation.
