Raanana Daycare Abuse: Parents Criticize Police Handling of Early Complaints
Parents of toddlers at a Raanana daycare criticized police for delaying investigations into abuse allegations. Two staff members have been convicted, awaiting sentencing.
Parents whose toddlers attended the Yona daycare in Raanana have criticized the Israel Police for its handling of early complaints regarding suspected child abuse at the facility. Although staff members confessed, were convicted, and are awaiting sentencing, families argue that initial delays allowed the abuse to persist.
Discovery of Abuse and Police Delays
One mother described the devastating moment her family uncovered the ordeal. "We are parents with a broken heart. In December 2023, we discovered that the most terrible thing a parent can imagine happened to us," she recounted. She detailed violent incidents, stating that her son was slapped, thrown into the air onto the floor, and forced to sit motionless on a chair.
Despite the severity of the initial allegations, parents reported that the police failed to advance the investigation promptly. Law enforcement officials initially attributed the delays to a heavy caseload and limited resources, explanations that outraged families of helpless toddlers unable to speak for themselves.
Police Apology and Investigation Scope
Following sharp criticism from the families, the former commander of the Kfar Saba police station apologized for the sluggish response. During a meeting with parents, he conceded that the time elapsed before prioritizing the case was unacceptable, citing competing operational demands while acknowledging the immense pain caused.
"The moment we got into this file, everyone was on this file, the entire station was on this file," the commander stated, explaining that investigators reviewed extensive security camera footage. He emphasized that the police mandate is to gather evidence and establish the truth rather than determine punishments, noting that the case was transferred to the State Attorney's Office due to its severity.
The Israel Police stated in response that a thorough investigation was conducted from the moment the complaint was received, resulting in indictments and ongoing court proceedings.
